Basi Akpabio

Basi Akpabio - volunteer championCreative Director, The Africa Channel

Basi joined The Africa Channel in March 2010 and is part of the new management team re-launching the channel.  Previous to this Basi’s career spanned promos, programme making and digital, working for all the major terrestrial channels.  Highlights include co-creating The House Doctor for Five and a Creative Directorship at the BBC. His interests include cinema, writing (he’s recently completed writing the first episode of a new sit com) and singing with one of London’s largest choirs.

Basi’s experience of volunteering with Media Trust:

Basi started volunteering with Media Trust in February 2009 as a Youth Mentor through a partnership with BAFTA. Since then he has worked with The Ideas Foundation and DNA Mix, in both cases he mentored diverse groups of young people on filmmaking projects.

Basi says…

“Working in the TV sector it can be difficult to know how to make a contribution to society beyond donating money to good causes. For me, Media Trust is a way of helping people with far fewer advantages than I had and actually seeing the effect that my efforts are making.

I also think that it can be comfortable but not very helpful to live in a middle-class bubble.  I've found it illuminating and stimulating to meet people with very different lives to mine and equally I hope that they have been influenced by my outlook and values.  Even if the contribution one makes through Media Trust is small I hope that it will have a positive effect.”
